Baldwin junior high students develop perseverance, teamwork skills through Eagle Village field trip
BALDWIN, Mich. — Baldwin Junior-Senior High School students learned important lessons about persevering through difficult challenges and supporting their classmates with encouragement during their recent field trip to Eagle Village in Hersey.
Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades participated in events including rock wall climbing, ropes courses and team building activities at Eagle Village. The nonprofit Eagle Village assists children and families through services including group retreats, team building programs, intervention camps, residential care, adoption and foster care.
Science teacher Brynn Mathis climbed the rock wall alongside one student who was nervous to do it. The student cried tears of happiness because she was so proud of herself, Mathis said.
“Our students and staff had an incredible time at Eagle Village, and we were thrilled to see our students push through intimidating challenges and cheer each other on, encouraging their classmates to take deep breaths and to not give up,” Mathis said. “We hope the students will take these skills and apply them to classwork and relationships both inside and out of school.”
This is the second year in a row Baldwin has taken field trips to Eagle Village, and staff has seen positive results as the experience brings students together and promotes kindness and understanding. The trip also helped promote positive relationships between students and staff.
“At Baldwin Community Schools, we are proud to provide our students with a well-rounded education and resources to promote academic excellence along with social emotional learning,” Superintendent David Forrester said. “Experiences like the field trips to Eagle Village go a long way toward developing determined, resilient and confident students.”
