What Parents Can Do to Help Students Prepare

What Can I Do to Support My Child?
Read at home with your child with books they enjoy.  Some ways to do this:
  • Read out loud to your child
  • Listen to your child read
  • Echo Read (you read a line, then they repeat)
  • Read together at the same time
  • Reread or retell favorite stories
Talk to Your Child About Reading
  • Ask your child to share what they remember
  • Ask questions about the reading
  • Connect the stories to your child's life or other books you've read
  • Encourage writing

Public Act 306
On October 6, 2016, Governor Snyder signed legislation into law that is commonly known as the Third-Grade Reading Law or Public Act 306. The new law requires all 3rd Grade students not scoring proficient on the 3rd Grade state summative assessment be retained. The legislation took effect immediately and 2016-17 kindergarteners will be the first cohort of students impacted by the retention aspect of the law in 2019-20.
