Dear Parents/Guardians,

I have some very exciting news about a program that Baldwin Elementary will be involved in this year.  We are one of 20 schools throughout the state selected to participate, based on an application we submitted last winter.  This awesome program is called Building Healthy Communities; it was developed and is coordinated by the Wayne State University Center for School Health and primary funding comes from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.  Here are ways our students (and teachers) will benefit:

  • A Healthy School Coordinator will come into most grade 2-4 classrooms throughout the year to provide lessons that teach kids how and why to eat healthy…as well as to promote and involve them in physical activity.  Each lesson includes a healthy food tasting!

  •  All teachers will receive a Healthy Snack list for parents.  Watch for these to come home soon and please do your part to send in healthy foods for snacks and classroom parties.

  • Our Physical Education teacher will participate in professional development and receive a nationally-recognized curriculum AND lots of high-quality PE equipment to use.

We will also receive a large rolling cart packed with equipment to use at recess to help get kids moving.  We know that physical activity improves academic performance and recess is a great time for students to work toward the recommendation that they be active at least 60 minutes daily.

  •  A Student Leadership Team will be formed to involve students in making changes at school to create more opportunities to eat healthy and be physically active.

  • A book bag will be coming home with most grade 2-4 classrooms at some point during the year.  It includes a healthy snack recipe booklet for you as well as beautiful children’s books promoting healthy choices that you can read together.

  • There will also be school-wide activities throughout the year that offer families a chance to be physically active together and/or watch food demos and sample healthy foods.

  • We will have a Physical Activity Club after school that offers non-competitive physical activities, serves a healthy snack and reviews daily health messages.

  • The library will receive a cart containing 30+ children’s books, each with a health theme.  Please encourage your child(ren) to check those books out so you can read them together.

  • And I (your principal) will be involved by including tips during morning announcements that challenge kids to choose healthy foods and increase their physical activity.  I will also send home information in our newsletter that will keep you updated on this school-wide health initiative.

Please support what students are learning at school by offering healthy choices at home and being physically active with your children as much as possible.
