Title I Parent Perception Surveys

By Stiles X. Simmons

Elementary School Principal/ Title Director

Baldwin Community Schools (K-8) receives Title I funds on an annual basis. Title I is a federal grant program designed to give educational assistance to students in areas of high poverty to ensure that all children meet challenging State academic content and student achievement standards. An important aspect of our Title I program is to provide teachers and parents the opportunity to participate in the school improvement process.  Twice a year, parents are given the opportunity to share their thoughts and perceptions on school-programs funded by Title I. A Parent Perception survey was sent to each parent, asking them to answer questions regarding our educational programs and to give the school "a grade." In the month of April, 335 surveys went to parents, 209 surveys were returned to the school. We appreciate the overwhelming response from our parents.

When asked what types of program (before, during, or after school) they would like to see, the parents offered a variety of responses including:

v  Math Tutorial program

v  Tutoring

v  Reading Groups

v  Art Classes

v  Accelerated Classes for Gifted and Talented

v  After-school programs for PreK

v  Gymnastics

v  Anti-bullying programs

v  Field Trips

v  Counseling

v  Elementary Sports Program

Parents listed the following needed improvements in our school:

v  School-wide Behavior Program

v  Increased parent involvement

v  Consistency in grading

Parents also stated the following as being great things happening at school:

v  Improvements in curriculum

v  Great Teachers

v  Enthusiastic and supportive staff

v  Reading Program

v  Technology

v  Project FOCUS

A few parents added these comments:

  1. "We are very pleased with the Baldwin Community School District. Our grandchildren absolutely love going to school."
  2. "I think the summer school program really helped."
  3. "I wish the school offered more creative arts and cultural experiences."
  4. "I feel that my child is receiving a world-class education"

Finally, our parents gave the Baldwin Elementary School an overall grade of "B."  We greatly appreciated the time it took to complete the surveys and to let us know the things we’re doing right and the things we need to improve upon.  This information is very helpful in planning future educational programs for our students.  Thanks again, have a great summer!
